Kokni Muslim Association, Nairobi, Kenya. Centenary celebrations 2025
August 15, 2025 - August 17, 2025
Assalaamu alaikum.
Kokni Muslim Association ( KMA), Nairobi, Kenya will be 100 years old in 2025. So KMA will be celebrating this Centenary occasion in August 2025 and invites its diaspora from around the world to join it in this special occasion.
A brief history of KMA is that the dozen or so Kokni Muslims, who had moved from the Kokan region in India to Nairobi around the First World War, formed a body in 1925 and named it Kokani Muslim Jamaat. One of the very limited objectives of the Jamaat was to maintain a small library comprising mainly Urdu books. The library, housed in a rented room, was believed to be the first of its kind in East Africa. In 1936, the Jamaat was renamed as the Kokani Muslim Community and Free Library. The Kokani Muslim Community and Free Library changed its name to “Kokni Muslim Association” in 1964.
There was an exodus of Koknis from Kenya after it gained independence mainly to United Kingdom, Australia and some emigrated to America.
To mark the Centenary event, the KMA Secretariat led by Rafia Khan ( nee Samnakay), will be organising various events and is sending an open invite to all Koknis living outside of Kenya to join it to celebrate this special occasion.
